Plaka

Plaka is the oldest historical area of Athens. It is the most picturesque neighborhood, located just beneath the Acropolis. It’s a maze of narrow, cobble stoned medieval streets that twist through ancient sites, passing beautiful neo-classical houses. Being almost car free It is the mix of sights that attracts the locals and tourists.

The main streets are Adrianou street and Kidathineon street.
Adrianou Street is the oldest street in Athens and is home to many tourist shops. It starts at the end of Lysikratous street in the south of Plaka, winding its way down, to the Hadrian’s Library.
Kidathineon street is known for its lively square (Filom. Eterias Square) with cafes, tavernas and restaurants. But also worth visiting are the three small museums: the Greek Folk Art Museum, the Frissiras Museum and the Museum of Greek Children's Art.
Anafiotika, a unique residential quarter of Plaka, is very much like a typical Cycladic village. It is a picturesque quarter built against the Acropolis by craftsmen from the island of Anafi. It is best to visit just before sunset. Walking through the narrow passages, all the way up, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the city.

Monastiraki

If you can, time your visit to Monastiraki to coincide with the Sunday morning flea market around Monastiráki square and along that side of the Agora. This is the day when people flood Monastiraki with antiques and junk, vintage clothes and rags, collectables and crap. There are vendors on the streets and many of the regular shops are open too. The streets can be so packed you just have to flow with the crowd and it does on all morning until the early afternoon when people drift home or to the many cafes, ouzeries, mezedopoleons and tavernas. Monastiraki is the place to enjoy the city's best kebab and souvlaki at Thanasis or Savvas.

Plaka Area

As soon as you start walking around Plaka's stone-paved, narrow streets, you will have the feeling that you are travelling back in time. This is Athens' oldest and, thanks to the restoration efforts which went into its buildings in recent years, most picturesque neighbourhood. You will be delighted by the beauty of the neo-classical colours of its houses, their architecture, their lovingly tended little gardens, the elegance, and the total atmosphere of the area. In Plaka, even the air is different; lighter, clearer, scented, like a gift from the gods. More Plaka
