"Great value, great breakfast"
We stayed here for a couple nights on our honeymoon in Sept '06. We got an *amazing* value at bookings.com- only $100 euro a night, but it was a pre-pay, no refund deal. If I had paid $277 I would probably not be nearly as enthusastic (I would stay somewhere else for that price), but we got an awesome deal—especially as other places I looked at in Athens seemed pretty expensive for not much. The metro was right outside which was very convenient for sightseeing as long as your are not out too late. The breakfast buffet was the absolute best of our honeymoon- they had lox, bagels, toppings, delicious greek yogurt, eggs, sausage, fruit, everything you could want or imagine. Table service for beverages. I think the reg price for the breakfast alone was around 20 euro each if you had to pay (and worth it), so we got quite the deal with our room.
The bathroom in the room was large and great, the shower was one of those waterfall showers with fabulous water pressure- the best of our stay. There was a seperate tub we didn't use.
The staff was very helpful and cashed our travelers checks with no fee.
There is a pool (a bit chilly) upstair and bar with a great view.
The area itself was nothing special but the metro access made it convenient. If you can't get a good deal I would probably stay somewhere else closer to Plaka, but this was the best hotel value we got on our trip and it worked out great for us. |

"A 5 Star Hotel? I don't think so.."
If you are thinking of staying at the Athens Imperial here are a few things to bear in mind. We booked it on the basis of the 5 star rating and the "easy walk to the Plaka" area of Athens. In reality both are far from the truth. The hotel itself is no way a 5 star standard establishment. Dark rooms with no natural light or fresh air (even the Air Con smelt of Cigarette Smoke). A really poor breakfast buffet - luke warm food and restaurant service comparable to an average motel. And the location? The grim square is actually a traffic roundabout with no redeeming features. There are no local cafes or restaurant that you wouldn't describe as rough. To walk to the Plaka area takes you through narrow grim streets full of pretty shady characters (even in daylight) and the less said about going through the Omnia square district the better. Overall this is a business conference hotel for Greek companies. It's not a tourist hotel in ambience or location. The only redeeming feature were the staff who were friendly and helpful.

"Loved the Imperial and its staff"
Stayed there with tour group Oct. 15 & 16 & 23 and found it an extremely hospitable hotel. We have done quite a bit of travelling in the U.S. and in Europe and , let me tell you, this hotel is among the best. The staff were very helpful, even coming outdoors with us and showing us the directions to the metro, ordering taxis for us, taking the time to write us the directions to the new Olympic Stadium. One waiter even went around the corner of the hotel to a little kiosk and brought us back a bottle of coke.
Service in the bar and dining room was excellent - staff were very busy but took the time to smile and greet us every time.
The rooms we had were immaculate (we also stayed there on the last night of our tour and had a different room) The rooms we stayed in were # 556 & 546. The lighting was a bit dull in the bathroom, but hey, how long does one want to stay in the bathroom - I had no problem shaving and drying my hair.
I agree it was not in the best area of Athens but it was close to the metro. We hope tostay there again on our next visit. |

"Good Hotel!"
+ Breakfast, roof top bar
- Roof top bar not open evening time, a special desk for transportation service and tourist information would be very good. |

"A
bit shabby for a 5* (or even 4)"
Our stay at this hotel didn't start on the best footing.
We had been bumped from the hotel we'd booked into,
the Athena Grand - more central and more our style.
In
contrast, this is the kind of place I hate to stay
- huge, impersonal, unstylish. Throughout the weekend
the place was crawling with conference guests, wedding
guests, large tour groups - making contacting reception
a nightmare. The pool area was closed the one time
we wanted to use it - they were setting up for a wedding.
This wasn't advertised anywhere, and seems to be typical
of big hotels - regular guests are 2nd class citizens.
The
reception staff were not great - didn't seem to know
much about their job and in one particular case manners.
One guy I asked 3 simple questions, and he gave me
3 answers which all proved incorrect, because he couldn't
be bothered checking, I guess.
Our
carpet was dirty and the fixtures in public areas
seemed a bit tatty (e.g. hole in the ceiling with
wires dangling out). Bathrooms good, though, nice
view (but beware of the many internal rooms if you're
booking into this place - a view of the breakfast
restaurant!). Internet outrageously expensive (12
euros/hr).
Breakfast
buffet was excellent, though.
The
location is OK - you can walk to Psiri for dinner,
but through some dodgy, smelly streets. The metro's
close-by, and on the same line as the Acropolis if
you're sightseeing. |

Plaka
Area |
| |
As
soon as you start walking around Plaka's stone-paved, narrow streets,
you will have the feeling that you are travelling back in time. This is
Athens' oldest and, thanks to the restoration efforts which went into
its buildings in recent years, most picturesque neighbourhood. You will
be delighted by the beauty of the neo-classical colours of its houses,
their architecture, their lovingly tended little gardens, the elegance,
and the total atmosphere of the area. In Plaka, even the air is different;
lighter, clearer, scented, like a gift from the gods. More
