"Best
Hotel in Athens"
This is the best hotel in Athens. Great rooms, location, and
staff. If you can stay here, we think it was well worth the
price. I highly recommend it. Not only because of the luxury
(not to mention the best breakfast view of the Acropolis), but
also because of the location. The rooms were very clean and
well-sized. Great bathrooms too - especially for Europe. |

"Opulent
Luxury"
We stayed at the Grande Bretagne in July of 2006. After our
stay in the islands, we wanted a quick stay in Athens before
we headed back to the U.S. My husband and I are extremely seasonsed
travelers. We have stayed all over the world in luxury (and
at times no so luxury depending on where we were) hotels. This
hotel was one of my favorites. It was truly "old world"
luxury and elegence. The spa and exercise room were state of
the art. The rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking the Acropolis
was AMAZING, especially watching the sun set. The bathrooms
were luxury. We had a soaking tub and a shower stall, and the
entire bathroom had every convenience known to man. At night,
turndown service was amazing. They even put bottled water next
to our beds and didn't charge us, as well as slippers near the
bed. Every convenience was there, and the layout of the rooms
was very thoughtful. I was impressed. I haven't stayed at a
hotel in the US as of yet on this level. Four Seasons and Ritz
Carleton (as well as others) included. I'd go back to Athens
just to stay in this hotel again. If you have the means, don't
stay at any other place!!!! |

"Lovely
hotel"
Great place to explore the centre of Athens. Somewhat expensive
but well worth it. Having stayed in Athens in the Ledra Marriott
the traffic noise there can be bad in the early hours, however
the Grande Bretagne was able to provide a lovely quiet room.
The spa is well worth a visit, although the swimming pool has
salty water in it! The GB restaurant is like the hotel - excellent
quality with great service but expensive.
The central location of the hotel gives quick access to the
excellent shopping and for further afield, the Athens taxis
are very cheap.
Overall, this is a lovely hotel. If you can get a corporate
rate, then it is good value. |

"Everything
a luxury historical hotel should be and more"
Everything a luxury historical hotel should be and more. The
bed was exquisite with beautiful linens, extremely comfortable
mattress and pillows. The marble bath and shower and amenities
unsurpassed. Not only was this a room with 12' ceilings and
lovely chandelier, it was a quiet lst floor room overlooking
the busy street of Athens with a balcony view. How did they
make the balcony doors so quiet to insulate the sound from our
room? From our balcony we could see the Parliament building
and the new Marta adjacent to our hotel whisked us easily to
the Acropolis. How fun was Athens and the Grand Bretagne? I
followed this stay to a luxury cruise ship for 7 days in the
Mediterrean and I was sad to leave Grand Bretagne Hotel. Simply
lovely.Be prepared to accept there is smoking in the lobby,
restaurants and bar areas. However, they to try to accommodate
you in seating you away from the smoke. |

"Luxurious
but not perfect"
I stayed at The Grande Bretagne in september in a delux room
with a huge balcony! I got a good deal by contacting the property
directly and being a starwood member (395 euro including tax
for a delux room with view or acropolis). The room was small
but lovely and the bathroom was certainly five star caliber.
The lobby was beautiful, the location was exceptional and service
was terrific. The bathroom had a little mold (not something
I expected in this 5 star establishment) and the I am not sure
what is so special about the rooftop balcony. The view from
our balcony was nicer. Overall it was a lovely and wonderful
place. |

"Beautiful
restauration"
Positive: Beautiful restoration. Our room was great and the
bed was very comfortable to sleep in. The rooftop pool and restaurant
were great.
Negative: Concierges weren't aware that the Olympic stadium
grounds were open for pedestrian traffic. We were made to wait
for 45 minutes for the concierge to arrange for a bellman to
open the store room so that we could access our bags. After
we checked out we asked to use the house phone and the concierge
said we really weren't allowed to use the phone as we weren't
guests of the hotel anymore, but then let us use it anyways.

"Cannot
Wait to return!!!"
I went with my mother, my aunt and her girlfriend on a 9 day
vacation in Athens. I was a little worried about my hotel choice,
since I made all the arrangements. This hotel made me look like
a hero! The staff was professional; I am not a fan of overly
friendly staff, so they were perfect. They were not able to
get us into a room right away so we went upstairs to the pool
bar and enjoyed a very nice lunch before we checked in. Both
of our rooms were beyond expectation! Unfortunately, both rooms
over looked the quiet, beautiful courtyard, instead of the Palace
- but the view was still awesome and very enjoyable.
The
rooms were of typical European size, so they were not large
rooms by US standards, but they were decorated as if they
were in a palace. Marble bathrooms, beautiful bedspreads &
carpeting, friendly "room" staff and great bathroom
amenities (loofahs (?) to help scrub off that hot, dusty June
day!).
I
searched hotel locations before I booked this hotel and was
a little nervous because it was so far away from the Port
(which I thought would have been a better location). Boy was
I wrong and lucky! The location of this hotel is EXCELLENT!!
Every morning we woke up and took a stroll across the street
to pick up our morning coffee and danish and never felt as
if we were in a "cautious" area. This hotel is just
off the Palatka and next to the Metro - so virtually everything
is accessible - even the port, if you so feel inclined.
The
locals were friendly and eager to speak to Americans. We found
an excellent place for a typical "American" breakfast
(Eggs, coffee, breakfast bread - ummmmm) just below the Acropolis,
I can't remember the name of it - but if you find it - you
will be very happy! It was a great way to start the day. |

Plaka
Area |
| |
As
soon as you start walking around Plaka's stone-paved, narrow streets,
you will have the feeling that you are travelling back in time. This is
Athens' oldest and, thanks to the restoration efforts which went into
its buildings in recent years, most picturesque neighbourhood. You will
be delighted by the beauty of the neo-classical colours of its houses,
their architecture, their lovingly tended little gardens, the elegance,
and the total atmosphere of the area. In Plaka, even the air is different;
lighter, clearer, scented, like a gift from the gods. More
