Syntagma
Square
Syntagma Square (Constitution Square), is located in central
Athens, Greece. The Square was named after the Constitution
which King Otto was forced to grant the people after a military
uprising began on September 3, 1843. |
The square is bordered by Vassileos Georgiou A' Street to the
north, Othonos Street to the south, Filellinon Street to the
west and Amalias Avenue to the east. Syntagma Square is a hub
for many forms of public transportation in Athens; the metro
and tram both stop here, and buses or trolley-buses are available
to any point in the city. The Square is also located near many
of Athens' oldest and most famous neighborhoods and tourist
attractions. The neighborhoods of Plaka , Monastiraki , Psirri
and Kolonaki are all within walking distance.
The Greek Parliament is just across Amalias Avenue to the East,
and is surrounded by the extensive National Gardens, which are
open to the public. Every hour, the Changing of the Guard ceremony,
performed by Greek army troops is conducted in front of the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

the area between the Square and Parliament. On Sundays and official
holidays the guards wear the traditional Evzones uniform. On
these days, the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place
with an army band and the majority of the 120 Evzones present
at 11am. |

Kolonaki
Area
Athens is at its trendiest north of Syntagma, and if you have money
to spend, Kolonáki is the place to do it, catering to every
Western taste from fast food to high fashion. The quarter is not especially
interesting for visitors to the city but it does give access to Lykavitós
Hill, where a funicular hauls you up for some of the best views of
the city. Also close by are two fine museums: one devoted to Cycladic
Art, the other, the Benáki, an assembly of just about all things
Greek, from Mycenaean artefacts to twentieth-century memorabilia.

Plaka
Area |
| |
As
soon as you start walking around Plaka's stone-paved, narrow streets,
you will have the feeling that you are travelling back in time. This is
Athens' oldest and, thanks to the restoration efforts which went into
its buildings in recent years, most picturesque neighbourhood. You will
be delighted by the beauty of the neo-classical colours of its houses,
their architecture, their lovingly tended little gardens, the elegance,
and the total atmosphere of the area. In Plaka, even the air is different;
lighter, clearer, scented, like a gift from the gods. More
